Stipend Requirements

  • Stipends are intended to compensate participants for their time commitment and to help defray the costs of participation, which may include expenses such as travel, lodging, and meals (for residential programs), and technical support (for virtual and combined programs).
  • Stipend amounts are determined by NEH based on the duration and format of the program.
  • Your stipend amount is taxable income.

Freedom Summer: 60 Years Later participants will receive the one week stipend.

National History Day Graduate Level Extension Credits

National History Day offers the option for teachers participating in the Freedom Summer: 60 Years Later program to earn three graduate extension credits from the University of San Diego. The cost is $260.00. Please check with your school to ensure that the credits will be accepted. You will receive an official transcript from the University after the program. The course involves the work you are already doing (participating in the virtual modules, attending the live program). The details are:

Credits: 3.0 graduate level extension credits
Course enrollment: The course is not open for public enrollment (we directly enroll interested participants with the university).
